The rare and beautiful 'super geek' - make sure you've read about nerds first The Dork: What is a dork? A dork is any nerd that is so acutely nerdy that a cursory visual appraisal leaves the immediate and intense impression that the subject is completely out of touch with reality. Dorks do not only have absolutely no sense of how ridiculous they look - it is as if some higher power has conspired to make them look ridiculous beyond the capacity of simple negligence. I have long been in the habit of identifying dorks and then ‘claiming’ them as objects of observation, usually under the appellation of ‘my dude’ – I sometimes have more than one ‘dude’ under my surveillance and they usually do not cease to provide entertainment. If there is any evidence that a god exists it is in the simple fact that those people most entertaining to watch are also those most easily identified from a crowd, almost as if we are being encouraged to take advantage of this gift of entertainment. Can I explain a typical dork? No, each is fantastically unique. A particular favorite was a portly lad who could as easily have been Lebanese or Persian and was given to wearing tight sweater vests, suspenders, slacks and a pink button down shirt and who had a distinctly ‘goofy’ grin and an ingenuously inquisitive manner in which he pursued the conversation of certain, homely females. In recalling the many dorks I’ve had the pleasure to observe over the years, I notice that they seem to fit into two categories – the fat silly ones and the skinny insecure ones. It is my natural desire to catalogue them but I believe that in understanding them I might shatter their allure. Therefore I will not meddle where scholars dare not tread – I shall leave the dorks to roam free and mysterious. |
