Design Journal - Demagogues

<Back

The purpose of Demagogues was to design a game around a theme, in this case, playing the role of a bishop. I thought it would be a challenge to build a game around a role where your primary actions are performing 'miracles' and converting a capricious public. When I wrote this, it wasn't long since I had taken medieval history, so the themes were still strong in my head, and it probably makes an effective educational tool.

Demagogues is a resource-management game and, I think fairly interesting and challenging. Particularly at the Advanced difficulties, you are forced to make some difficult decisions when faced with the possibility of burning your own towns in order to prevent the greater evil.

The greatest fault of the game is the interface. I wrote it in javascript because it was easy, accessible to anyone with a web browser and I kind of liked the idea of the whole game being open source. The problem turned out to be the html; every browser interprets it differently and it was nearly impossible to do any sophisticated tricks to simplify the interface. The end result is a game that takes a few minutes to figure out, but if you give it a chance, I think it's a lot of fun.
