Design Journal - Regicide |
<Back |
This was the first game I wrote when I sat down to make some games to help me get a job in the game industry. The purpose of Regicide was to explore emergent gameplay in a simple, semi-predictable, rule-based system. I later re-wrote the game in Flash, with a plan to convert all of my javascript games. Currently, Regicide remains the only game to receive the upgrade.
I wrote Regicide not long after reading The Count of Monte Cristo, so all of the characters have pre-revolutionary French titles. It was my intention to experiment with different room sizes, door placement and number of guards, but my initial set-up turned out to be pretty much perfect.
The thing I really like about Regicide is that it's easy to play and even to win but it is exceedingly difficult (but not impossible) to win consistently. To highlight this I based the scoring on consecutive wins and you can set your personal best (unfortunately the leaderboard functionality doesn't work).
