| What began inauspiciously as the Urban Safari - Aaron and I surreptitiously snapping photos of the odd denizens of Santa Cruz while wearing khaki shorts, has developed progressively in my mind into something deeper. I have always been, at heart, a sociologist; an advocate of the scientific process in the explanation of human activity. Unfortunately, sociologists appear to have a bad reputation - nobody seems to like them. This may be because they pry into human psychology or because they come up with unwanted answers for all of the little problems that humans so love to bitch about (e.g. undesirable people don't actually desire to understand the opposite sex when they vociferate their ignorance - the truth being quite painful and nearly impossible to remedy). Or it could be because sociologists have an aggravating habit of losing their opinions and with them, their very souls! This is why I choose to be a renegade sociologist; I make my observations objectively but then pass judgement subjectively. Some might claim that this is actually worse, and when read in black and white this certainly seems to be the case, but in actual practice it proves to be a satisfyingly human approach to understanding the harsh realities of life. |
