Words I do not know

Here is a list of words I do not know. Once I know a word on this list, I will remove it. This list is an attempt to facilitate my learning new words

Simply recognizing the definition of a word does not qualify as 'knowing' it - I must be able to associate it with its synonyms.

The definitions are sometimes my own paraphrases

Words

susurration - a soft murmur or whisper

parlous - dangerous and risky - hazardous

ineluctable - inevitable
funny, there is no 'eluctable'

exegesis - an explanation
especially of a text

moue - a little grimace
think pouting, pronounced 'moo' which means you probably can't use this in speech

ecumenical - ubiquitous
also describes a marriage of disparate things as in religions or styles

sybaritic - sensualist
not to be confused with 'sibylline' which means prophetic

contumatious - rebellious
like 'froward', another tricky word

lassitude - condition of fatigue

proscribe - to denounce as dangerous / to banish

impute - to lay blame falsely

obviate - to anticipate and prevent

desultory - leaping from one thing to another

tautology - a needless repetition of an idea

syllogism - deductive reasoning

perspecuity - transparency
not to be confused with 'perspicacity' which means cleverness

putative - commonly accepted, supposed to exist
is this the positive version of reputed?

endued - endowed
- this one should be easy

redound - to result, appropriate of deserving honor

contemn - despise

quotidian - commonplace / daily

mendatious - dishonest
not to be confused with 'mendicant' which means beggar

execrate - to denounce or to hate

encomium - warm praise or an expression thereof

tendentious - biased
having a preexisting tendency

abstruse - esoteric, recondite
like we really need another one of these words

pertinatious - persistantly tenatious

propitiate - to appease
a new member for my favorite team of words, including 'unpropitious' and 'impropriety'
